Optimum Frustration in Children
February 21st, 2008 by phyllis
Parents need to balance protecting children from being truly neglected to protecting them from feeling the effects walking instead of being driven somewhere, being upset, feeling angry or not getting what you want. Appropriate frustration is a great teacher. It is how a baby learns to crawl, walk and talk. He keeps trying no matter what and eventually succeeds. Pampering and spoiling children, does more damage than just about anything as it removes the urge for competence and leaves a child feeling unable and inferior. A child who is never dissatisfied and never has to feel the pain of not getting something, will not have learned the skills to be successful in the world as an adult.
