Teaching Your Child to be Generous

Use this holiday season to teach your children about generosity and the spirit of giving. Last year I took my 4 year old grandson to the mall. Before we left, I spoke to him in kid appropriate language that some children don’t receive any presents for Christmas and that we can help. Together we headed to the toy store. It was a bit of a stretch for him, because of course he wanted most of what we were looking at. But, he selected something and took it to the register. We paid for it and I had brought along all the supplies for wrapping the gift. He helped with the whole process and proudly handed his precious gift that he wrapped, to the lady who was collecting them. She was wonderful at complementing him on his kindness. We left both feeling that we had done something good and it will be something we do together each holiday season.
Having kids go through older toys that are lightly used to give to Goodwill is also another great idea and it helps clean out room for the new gifts Christmas brings!
